A/C and Heating Questions
Common Questions About A/C and Heating
What can I do when my a/c system is in need of constant repairs?
Repair costs to your a/c & heating system are to be expected at some point. When it starts costing on a frequent basis throughout each season, it might be time to look into a new replacement unit or complete system replacement. Many systems today come with 5 to 10-year warranties and much more energy efficient than most current systems.
Do I need to have regular maintenance if my unit is working properly?
Yes. Yearly preventive maintenance can help catch smaller problems before they turn into much bigger and costlier problems. Call us anytime to schedule a preventive maintenance service or click here to learn more about our Quality service agreements.
Why does my breaker to outside unit trip often?
This could be due to a weak breaker and it likely needs to be replaced. It could also be that your compressor on the outside unit (condenser) has grounded. If this is the case, you might be looking at having to replace the compressor or outside unit.
My outside unit isn’t coming on. Is there anything I can do before calling Smith Quality Air & Heat?
Yes, you can check the breaker to see if it has tripped. Also, make sure that your thermostat is on. If both are working properly, you will need to have a licensed technician come out and diagnosis the problem.
My unit is coming on but not blowing cold air. Is there anything I can do before calling Smith Quality Air & Heat?
Yes, you can check your filters to see if they are dirty. If they are clean you will need to have a licensed technician come out and service your system.
How can I save on my energy bills?
When you are away from home or asleep try setting your thermostat up a few degrees (for a/c) and down a few degrees (for heat). Also, having a higher efficiency a/c & heating system with an updated thermostat will help drop your energy bills too. Call us at 281-592-8959 so we can discuss different options to help save on your electric bill.
Why does my a/c coil leak water on the floor of my mobile home?
It could be that your filters have not been cleaned. Also, it might be that your coil is very clogged and needs cleaning. These two reasons means that airflow has been restricted. NOTE: Cleaning the coil should be done by a licensed a/c technician since this requires removing refrigerant from the system.
How can a preventive maintenance plan help save me money?
You can save a lot of money if you have preventative maintenance done twice a year on your air conditioning and heating system. Many systems have loose or corroded wires, burnt contactor points, low refrigerant levels, corroded burners on gas furnaces, ductwork that may need to be re-attached properly. Why are filters an essential part of my a/c and heating system?
Because without them, the evaporator coil in your attic will clog up and air flow will be restricted. This causes the coil to freeze up. To help prevent this, check your filters on a regular basis.
What does SEER rating mean on my a/c unit?
That tells you how your efficiency is measured on your a/c and heating system. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. Typically, a higher SEER rating means your unit is more energy efficient and this could potentially save you money on your electric bill.
What is a heat pump and how does it work?
A heat pump is an alternative to electric or gas heating. It is typically used in milder winter climates. However, a number of heat pumps exist in Texas too. If the temperatures get below a certain point, your auxiliary heat will kick in to bring the temperature back up so that the heat pump can take it from there. The evaporator and condenser change functions from cooling to heating. It works off of a reversing valve that changes over depending on what is called for.
What is the benefit of having digital or smart thermostat compared to a standard thermostat?
It is much easier to work than a digital thermostat. Also, it has a lighted display, which is very convenient. They come in programmable or non-programmable models. There are also other upgraded thermostats that work with many types of smartphones. Call us at 281-592-8959 to ask about different thermostat options for your home or office.
